Description

The Solidus forms part of the 2020 range of Black Panther snare drums from Mapex. Black Panther snares are known across the industry for their excellent sound, high-quality construction and striking, unique visual styles. This brand new series is no different – featuring the same attention to detail you know and love, with updates and refinements across the board. Encompassing new sizes, features and materials, there's plenty to explore.

Build Quality

The backbone of this 14" x 7" snare is an 11-ply 11mm maple shell. It boasts a 45-degree batter side and a 35-degree snare side. Add to this a quad vented chamber, and the end result is a snare that delivers a big punch, with a crisp crack that will be sure to turn heads.

A number of smart features assist in other areas too. A cylinder drive snare strainer and butt-end adjuster make use of a self-lubricating bearing. This helps to create a far smoother operation. Smart microlock adjustment is present too, allowing for more accurate control over your sound, while stopping your snare wires from becoming loose while you practice, perform or record.

Sound Reinforcement

Tuning drums can sometimes be an annoying and time consuming process. However, thanks to the SONIClear bearing edges included here, those headaches are a thing of the past. They guarantee a great sound, even with limited tuning experience. How do they work though? They allow the head of the drum to sit flatter; this in turn ensures better contact with the shell. This leads to a lower and stronger overall pitch, as well as far more consistent tuning. The actual tuning range is enhanced too!

The SONIClear bearing edges work in conjunction with the Sonic Saver Hoops. These were especially created for the Black Panther series. They ensure that your snare remains in tune, while simultaneously improving its projection.

Drums

Drums are the rhythmic backbone of modern music, providing pulse, energy, and structure across countless styles and genres. From acoustic drum kits and marching drums to hand percussion and electronic systems, drums are designed to be played physically and expressively, responding directly to touch, technique, and dynamics.

Acoustic drums are built from shells, heads, and hardware that work together to shape tone, volume, and sustain. Different sizes, materials, and tunings allow drummers to create sounds ranging from deep and powerful to tight and articulate. Electronic drums expand this further by offering volume control, sound variety, and integration with recording and digital music systems.

Drums are used in live performance, recording, education, and practice, making them one of the most versatile instrument families in music. Whether played softly or with force, alone or as part of a full band, drums play a central role in driving rhythm, supporting musicians, and shaping the feel of a piece of music.

A snare drum provides clarity, backbeat, and definition within a drum kit, acting as the main voice for timing and accents. Its tight head and metal snares create a sharp, responsive sound that cuts through a mix, making it essential for groove, dynamics, and rhythmic punctuation. The snare drum controls feel and expression, allowing drummers to play everything from soft ghost notes to powerful backbeats that drive the music.
