Cajons are one of the most popular percussion instruments today. Meinl offers two different assembly sets in their ultimate cajon selection for you to build your own! The MEINL Make Your Own Cajon kit featuring an Ovangkol Wood frontplate accompanies a solid resonating body to deliver superior sound quality as well as a remarkable appearance. Birch wood, one of the most popular woods used in drum set construction, is used to build the resonating body to give warm, deep bass tones and project cutting snare slaps. The kit comes with all the cajon parts and a list of the materials and tools needed to construct it. Brand

Meinl

Meinl is a major percussion and cymbal manufacturer best known for its strong presence in modern drumming, percussion, and hybrid setups. The brand has built a reputation for innovation and variety, offering instruments that suit traditional drummers, percussionists, and players exploring more experimental or contemporary sounds.

Meinl produces a wide range of cymbals covering styles from rock, metal, and pop through to jazz, fusion, and electronic-influenced music. In addition to cymbals, Meinl is especially respected for its percussion instruments, including cajons, bongos, congas, shakers, effects cymbals, and auxiliary percussion that integrates easily into drum kits. This makes Meinl a popular choice for players who want to expand their sound beyond a standard setup.

The brand places strong emphasis on modern playing styles, sound design, and artist collaboration, which has helped shape many current drumming trends. For drummers and percussionists looking for distinctive sounds, creative options, and gear that supports both traditional and experimental playing, Meinl is a widely trusted and forward-thinking choice.

Category

Percussion

Percussion covers a wide and diverse family of instruments that create sound through being struck, shaken, or scraped. It includes everything from drum kits and hand drums to auxiliary instruments such as shakers, tambourines, cowbells, blocks, and mallet percussion. Percussion adds rhythm, texture, and colour to music across virtually every genre.

Hand percussion instruments like congas, bongos, djembes, and cajons are played using the hands or simple techniques, while auxiliary percussion is often added to drum kits to expand rhythmic and tonal options. Mallet percussion, such as xylophones and similar instruments, introduces melody as well as rhythm, broadening the musical role percussion can play.

Percussion is used in live performance, studio recording, education, and therapy, making it one of the most versatile areas of music making. Whether providing subtle rhythmic detail or driving the main groove, percussion instruments allow players to shape feel, dynamics, and expression in ways that support and enhance the music.

Cajon

A cajon is a box-shaped percussion instrument that produces bass and snare-like sounds using hand technique. It allows players to create rhythm, groove, and dynamic variation in a compact, acoustic format, often replacing or complementing a drum kit. Cajons provide low-end thump, sharp backbeat accents, and subtle textures, making them ideal for acoustic performances, small venues, and stripped-back musical settings.
