Description

Sontronics Drum Microphones

Representing over two years of research, development and field testing, Sontronics DM-1B for kick drum and our pencil condensers (DM-1T for tom and DM-1S for snare) take Sontronics further into application-specific miking.

The DM-1B is a large-diaphragm, end-fire condenser microphone that has been designed specifically to capture and reproduce the various characteristics of a kick drum: the beater click, the heavy thump, the boomy decay and so on.

Sontronics DM-1B has a switchable -15dB pad that allows the microphone to deal with a whopping 155dB, and its sturdy build plus the aluminium flightcase mean it will perform equally well in the studio and in live applications.

The DM-1B and our other drum mics were all tested to destruction before launch, by various session drummers, live musicians and producers, including Flood (U2, Killers, Arctic Monkeys) who found that the DM-1B also gives excellent results on bass instruments, especially bass guitar cabs.

For a kick drum or bass instrument stand that stands out in the mix and is comparable to that offered by mics costing up to ten times the price, the Sontronics DM-1B is the obvious choice.

Quotes

“I used Sontronics drum mics with Flood at Assault & Battery where we compared them to mics costing significantly more. We were blown away by how good they sounded!” – Mark Rankin, Engineer/Producer (Florence & The Machine, Queens of the Stone Age, Plan B, Adele)

“The DM-1B is a thing of beauty… I tried it on a few bass drums and was immediately in love with its voicing as well as its look. It’s spacious and natural, totally focused on the characteristics you want to hear from your kick.” – Simon Edgoose, review for mikedolbear.com

“The results I’ve experienced with DM-1B, DM-1T and DM-1S have been amazing. I'm recording in a fairly small room and these mics capture the sound of the drums with all the punch and clarity that I need. The detail of the close mics is incredible!” – Pete Parada, Drummer for My Chemical Romance & The Offspring

Brand

Sontronics

Sontronics is a UK-based microphone manufacturer known for building high-quality studio microphones with a strong focus on character, reliability, and real-world use. Designed and developed in the UK, Sontronics microphones are widely used in studios, broadcast environments, and live recording setups, offering a balance between modern clarity and musical warmth.

The Sontronics range covers large-diaphragm condensers, pencil condensers, ribbon microphones, and specialist models, many of which are well suited to drums and percussion. Their microphones are commonly used on kick drums, snares, toms, overheads, and room mics, delivering detailed attack, controlled low end, and smooth high frequencies without sounding harsh. This makes them a popular choice for both studio engineers and drummers recording their own kits.

Sontronics is known for robust build quality and long warranties, reflecting confidence in their products and a commitment to longevity rather than disposable gear. For drummers and producers looking for microphones that sound musical, handle high sound pressure levels, and work reliably session after session, Sontronics has earned a strong reputation as a dependable and thoughtfully designed brand.

Category

Drum Microphones

Drum microphones are designed to capture the power, detail, and dynamics of a drum kit in both live and studio environments. Because drums produce fast transients and very high sound pressure levels, dedicated drum mics are built to handle impact and volume while delivering clear, controlled sound.

Different microphones are used for different parts of the kit. Kick drum microphones focus on low-end weight and attack, snare and tom mics capture punch and articulation, and overhead microphones provide balance, cymbal detail, and a sense of space. Room microphones are often added to capture ambience and depth, especially in studio recordings.

Drum microphones are chosen based on sound character, placement flexibility, and reliability. Whether used individually or as part of a matched drum mic kit, the right microphones make it easier to achieve a balanced, professional drum sound for live gigs, rehearsals, home recording, and full studio productions.

Kick Mic

A kick mic is designed to capture the low-end power and attack of a bass drum, translating physical impact into a clear, punchy sound. It controls deep frequencies while emphasising beater definition, helping the kick drum cut through a mix without sounding muddy. A good kick mic anchors the rhythm, adds weight to the groove, and keeps the low end tight and controlled in both live and studio settings.
