Description

Sontronics Drum Microphones

The Sontronics DM-1T and DM-1S, along with the DM-1B represent the British mic brand's first foray into direct drum miking. The microphones took over two years of research, development and testing and, like all Sontronics mics, they offer the best quality and the most professional sounding results but at an incredible price.

The Sontronics DM-1T and DM-1S have been meticulously designed by Sontronics' founder and designer, Trevor Coley, to capture the exact characteristics of your tom and snare: the skin slap, the snare rattle, the attack, boom, decay and so on. Rather than create one mic that gets good results from either/or snare and tom, these mics have a slightly different frequency response graph to get exceptional results from each drum.

Like the DM-1B (our condenser mic for kick drum and bass instruments), these end-fire pencil-style condensers both have a -10dB pad switch that allow the mics to cope with up to 135dB SPL, and we know that all our drum mics work really well both live and in the studio.

The Sontronics DM-1T and DM-1S have been thoroughly tested to their limits by various session drummers, live musicians and producers, including Flood (U2, Killers, Arctic Monkeys) and Mark Rankin (Friendly Fires, Florence & The Machine). Hear your drumkit in a whole new dimension thanks to Sontronics’ impressive and unmatchable DM-series mics.

Quotes

“For the new Friendly Fires album we had the DM-1S and another mic that cost ten times more on snare. We had to keep checking the patching because we thought the DM-1S was the £1,000 mic. Incredible!” – Mark Rankin, Engineer/Producer (Florence & The Machine, Queens of the Stone Age, Plan B, Adele)

“These mics capture a full and present sound from both toms and snare with a good transient punch and total clarity. Very competitively priced for the results you can achieve.” – Rhythm Magazine

“The results I’ve experienced with DM-1B, DM-1T and DM-1S have been amazing. I'm recording in a fairly small room and these mics capture the sound of the drums with all the punch and clarity that I need. The detail of the close mics is incredible!”- Pete Parada, Drummer for My Chemical Romance & The Offspring

Brand

Sontronics

Sontronics is a UK-based microphone manufacturer known for building high-quality studio microphones with a strong focus on character, reliability, and real-world use. Designed and developed in the UK, Sontronics microphones are widely used in studios, broadcast environments, and live recording setups, offering a balance between modern clarity and musical warmth.

The Sontronics range covers large-diaphragm condensers, pencil condensers, ribbon microphones, and specialist models, many of which are well suited to drums and percussion. Their microphones are commonly used on kick drums, snares, toms, overheads, and room mics, delivering detailed attack, controlled low end, and smooth high frequencies without sounding harsh. This makes them a popular choice for both studio engineers and drummers recording their own kits.

Sontronics is known for robust build quality and long warranties, reflecting confidence in their products and a commitment to longevity rather than disposable gear. For drummers and producers looking for microphones that sound musical, handle high sound pressure levels, and work reliably session after session, Sontronics has earned a strong reputation as a dependable and thoughtfully designed brand.

Drum Microphones

Drum microphones are designed to capture the power, detail, and dynamics of a drum kit in both live and studio environments. Because drums produce fast transients and very high sound pressure levels, dedicated drum mics are built to handle impact and volume while delivering clear, controlled sound.

Different microphones are used for different parts of the kit. Kick drum microphones focus on low-end weight and attack, snare and tom mics capture punch and articulation, and overhead microphones provide balance, cymbal detail, and a sense of space. Room microphones are often added to capture ambience and depth, especially in studio recordings.

Drum microphones are chosen based on sound character, placement flexibility, and reliability. Whether used individually or as part of a matched drum mic kit, the right microphones make it easier to achieve a balanced, professional drum sound for live gigs, rehearsals, home recording, and full studio productions.

Tom Mic

A tom mic is designed to capture the full body and attack of tom drums while controlling bleed from nearby cymbals and snare. It delivers focused punch, clear tone, and consistent response across fills and grooves, helping toms sound powerful and defined in a mix. A good tom mic makes toms translate cleanly in both live and studio settings, preserving impact without unwanted noise.
